Over on the forums, there was an ongoing debate occurring about the philosophy of a superhero engaging in no killing whatsoever. After about four pages, inspiration finally hit me about the reason for it and we see it above.
Simply put, Lightbringer wants to create a better world where there is no killing and he doesn't want to be a hypocrite by building that future on the deaths of other people, no matter how malevolent or twisted.
