Eddie Crane

Age: 48

Occupation: Pharos City Police Chief

History: Although his parents encouraged him to pursue a singing career, Eddie always wanted to be a police officer like his retired father. He excelled through the academy with the highest marks possible and got a New York beat when he was 23. After meeting his wife and having two children, and going through several promotions until he became Lieutenant, he thought life could only continue on the sweet track. However, during a bungled armed robbery of his apartment, his wife and children were murdered. Although the murderer was caught and sentenced to life in prison, Eddie didn't have the heart to remain in New York. When the Police Chief position was opened in Pharos City, no one wanted it due to how much crime there was and because of rumors that the previous Chief had been murdered in his bed while his family was kidnapped by the Slavers. Eddie jumped at the opportunity, putting his name up front for the position in hopes of doing some good while also escaping the memory of his lost family.

Despite all his attempts to save Pharos, his work was constantly countered by the criminals and corrupt. He continued along, though, not knowing what else he could do. However, the news of the Lightbringer's appearance brought about new hope for him. At first a little wary due to the vigilantes that had existed in Pharos' past, Crane soon learned he could trust the Lightbringer not to become a killer after succesffully destroying the Slavers without having to kill anyone.

Author's Notes: I wanted Lightbringer to have a connection to the police so he'd have a little validity. In addition to the philosophical ideals of moral absolutes that I've mentioned before, I'm also an Optimist. As such, I do believe that the best can occur with little or no mishap, as was the case with Lightbringer's relationship with the police. Instead of the police just hunting down this crazy guy running around in a costume, Crane gave him a little trust and that trust paid off in a big way.

At first, I didn't know what I wanted that connection to the police to be. At first I thought of it being the police commissioner, but with Carter's parents already having been gunned down in a reminiscent manner to Batman's, I feared for the originality in that being the case. As such, I then considered having a police detective be his contact, but I scrapped it when I decided I needed as high-up a person as I could who could act as a liason between Lightbringer and other law enforcement agencies.

While it's hinted at in his history, the name of Eddie Crane comes from a dated B-movie called The Beatniks (which features no Beatniks of any kind). The movie was featured on Mystery Science Theater 3000, where I beheld the singing talents of the character. I sadly have been unable to find copies of his songs (not surprisingly), which are Sinatra-esque jazz tunes.
